Restitution of the bronze windows of the Dong Ting in the Summer Palace.

 

HISTORIQUE
Bought in 1910 in an auction by the manager of the Banque d'Indochine. 

A letter addressed in 1911 to the owner by Mr. Nicolas Tsu, Comprador of the Banque d'Indochine, tells of His Excellency Sheng's (Minister of Communications) intention of buying the panels to restore them to the Emperor's Summer Palace.

 

This transaction having failed, the windows officially left China for Paris on 5 August 1912, after payment to customs of the sum of 105 bank taels and 7 dollars (letter from Mr. Lepissier, Consul of France in Shanghai). Since that time, they have remained in the same family.

 

In 1992:
The Gallery Jacques Barrère presents them on the occasion of the Biennale des Antiquaires at the Grand Palais in Paris, having acquired them also in an auction, and identified them thanks to an old photograph of the pavilion.

 

LE 2 JUILLET 1993:
American International Insurance Co. Mr. Edmund Tse president, buys the windows, under the condition set by Jacques Barrère that they be returned to their original setting. AUTOMNE 1993
The People's Republic of China organizes the official reception of the windows in Peking. The Dong Ting is now beck to its original appearance.
